The following information is to get you publish to your Personal Web Space, if you need assistance with connecting to your personal web space, we have provided some connection tutorials. There are many FTP (File Transfer Protocol) clients available for use although the most popular are WS_FTP, CuteFTP, and Microsoft FrontPage®.

Please note that your Personal Web Space does not support any server-side scripting languages such as PHP, ASP, or Perl, nor does it have Microsoft FrontPage® Server Extensions enabled.

You can create web pages using HTML and upload them to your web space. HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the simple language used to create web pages, if you would like a quick HTML tutorial Click Here.

Once you have made a connection to the Personal Web Space Server, you will need to create a folder (directory) on the server called public_html. This folder must exist in order to view the files you upload on the Internet.

After the public_html folder is created you can then upload files into that directory. The method to upload files from your computer to the server will vary between FTP clients. Once the file has been uploaded, you will be able to view the file by typing the address http://users.cablemo.net/~username/filename in your Internet browser. So if you uploaded a picture (ie. vacation.jpg) to the server and your FTP user name is kermit then you would enter the address http://users.cablemo.net/~kermit/vacation.jpg.

If you are uploading a personal web page then the file that is to display first needs to be called index.html. Some HTML (Hyper Text Mark-Up Language) Editors will save the file for you but with an .htm extension, you will need to change this to .html for the index file to properly display.

Note on Naming Files:

When naming your files don't use special characters such as: ? / > < , " ' ; : [ ] { } | \ ) ( * & ^ % $ # @ ! ~ ` + =, you can however use - _ . (hyphen, under-score, or period). It is also a good idea to keep the file names short, under 27 characters, and meaningful. Servers are also case sensitive so it is good practice to keep your file names lower case.

If you have uploaded a file and are try to view it on the Internet and you encounter the following error:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /~username/ on this server.

then there is a problem with your index file. To view this file it needs to be called index.html. If you type in the address to your personal web space and all you see is a white page with no content then there is a problem with the way you are trying to display the content.

If you are uploading pictures that you want viewed on the Internet it is a good idea to use the same naming conventions as mentioned above. Don't use spaces in the name, for instance use "my_picture.jpg" instead of "my picture.jpg".

When you want to a view an image that you have uploaded to your web space you can do so by typing in the address of your web space plus the name of the image. For instance if you uploaded a picture called "car.jpg" and your user name was kermit then the address you would type in is http://users.cablemo.net/~kermit/car.jpg.

Note to eBay® Users

If you have an item posted on eBay or another site that you want to display an image of then you will want to have your Personal Web Space created then upload an image of the item. The address or URL of the item that you will give eBay would be http://users.cablemo.net/~your_username/image_name.jpg.

If you are not able to view an image or graphic then there is most lilely a problem with the name of the image or a problem with how it is being displayed. The first thing to check is the image name, make sure the are no spaces in the name or special characters. Also check the spelling of the image, if you uploaded an image name "car.jpg" but are trying to view it through the browser using "Car.jpg" the image will not display.
